It is MHC’s Research and Development (R&D) Division priority to continue to develop innovative affordable housing products and creative housing concepts for the residents of Mississippi. MHC has created a housing development work group to initiate and support housing development projects using MHC’s loan products. The goal of the work group is to encourage more builders to meet the needs of the affordable market segment.

The development work group consists of three staff members from R&D and one from Program Operations. Other MHC staff are involved as their particular expertise is needed.

MHC’s marketing staff works with the housing development group to coordinate promotion of site development and construction lending products with our homebuyer financing.

Housing Development Work Group activities include:

• Identifying and cultivating non-profit and for-profit partners to undertake housing development in priority geographical areas
• Providing technical assistance in planning affordable housing developments, assessing market demand, structuring project financing, and assisting with project implementation
• Writing housing grants to fill gaps in project financing
• Providing technical assistance and capacity building services for non-profits, including workshops and consultation with individual groups
• Providing housing counseling grant funding, when available, and technical assistance with contract implementation
• Working with local government, lenders, non-profits, homebuilders, and real estate agencies to finance developments
